The project aims to demonstrate the viability of converting the vessels for dual operation with ammonia and LNG. The tests will be carried out on the "Stril Pioneer", an offshore supply vessel (OSV) currently operating with Wärtsilä 32DF dual-fuel engines using LNG as the primary fuel. By using a mixture of ammonia and LNG, CO2 emissions from the combustion process will be significantly reduced.
"Decarbonization is fundamental to the future of shipping, and Wärtsilä is fully committed to helping our customers achieve this goal. This collaboration agreement represents further proof of this commitment. We are leading the way towards the adoption of future marine fuels cleaner alternatives through extensive testing and research, and we see ammonia as an extremely promising option."
Cato Esperø, Norwegian Sales Manager, Wärtsilä.
“We are delighted to join Wärtsilä on this project. We see this as a step towards meeting our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, and our ambition is to reduce our fleet's CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030. By 2050 we expect to achieve net zero carbon emissions. . "
